HORSE SLEEP PATTERN
A very peculiar habit that horses have, which is somewhat similar to the birds, is their ability to sleep while standing straight up. A “stay apparatus” in their legs lets the horse doze off for a brief sleep without the danger of collapsing. This is an evolutionary hangover which helped wild horses to be wary of predators at all times. A few horses would stay on guard dozing off, while standing and the rest could lie down to sleep.
Horses unlike humans can sleep with breaks between naps. They don’t need a continuous stretch of sleep for 6-8 hrs. Sleep can be divided into intermittent naps of 15 minutes each, either standing or sitting to make up a total sleep duration ranging from couple of minutes to several hours.
Horses for sale however, require at least an hour or two of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep every 2-3 days and this can only be achieved by lying down. A horse with no room to sit or who is made to forcibly stand up for long can suddenly collapse when they enter REM sleep involuntarily.
